The FINANCIAL — Caucasus University held an Open Day for the 2008-2009 academic year of its Caucasus School of Business, Caucasus School of Law, Caucasus School of Media and newly launched Caucasus School of Technology.
According to the Vice President of CU, George Simongulashvili, Caucasus University is offering every entrant at CU a laptop as a gift for long term use. This project is starting this year but is to continue so every entrant in any school of Caucasus University will receive such a present in the future as well.
“We want our students to be more integrated in the learning process,” Simongulashvili told The FINANCIAL.
“We live in the era of internet technology and many interesting materials for study can be accessed via the internet, so we want our students to get as much information from every source possible,” he added.
“We have not accompanied educational conjuncture, you know that in this current year schools providing general education have no graduates. Despite almost all universities’ numbers of entrants having decreased, our school is showing the opposite. Last year we had 100 students, this year the number of students at admission is to be 135,” Zaza Maruashvili, Dean of Caucasus School of Law, told The FINANCIAL.
According to Kakha Shengelia, President of Caucasus University, CU has two main novelties this year. A new School of Technology has opened and Caucasus School of Law is offering its entrants a joint Georgian-European program in law (LLB).
“It is happening for the first time in the Georgian educational system, that a Georgian European bachelor in law program is taking start. We hope to admit 35 students for this program,” said Maruashvili.
“We have partnership relations with an international public organization of law and together we are starting a 4 year bachelor degree program. The students will study 15 different subjects and after graduation from this program they will be absolutely ready to continue study at any university around the world for a master degree with a profile in international law,” added Maruashvili.
According to Shengelia, the learning process of this program lasts four years, but in the last year students will study in Greece and after graduation from this program, they will receive a dual bachelor degree in law.
According to Maruashvili, a fluent English background is a must for entrants in this program, also they prefer students with high points in general skills.
According to Simongulashvili, at the newly launched Caucasus School of Technology, they are going to admit 60 students this year, but for the next year the number of entrants will increase.
The Caucasus School of Technology in the academic year 2008-2009 is offering its entrants four faculties:
– Databases and Knowledge-Based Systems
– Graphics and Human-Computer Interaction
– Networks, Parallel and Distributed Computing
– Computer Software Systems
“These are much demanded professions, the first brings one into closer contact with the advertising and media business, the second with business companies, telecommunication companies and in these spheres, the management of databases is very important,” Simongulashvili told The FINANCIAL.
“Today there is a very great demand in the market for engineers of technology and for people who know technology well. In the School of Technology we offer students a bachelor degree corresponding to Western standards not only in computer skills, but also wholly in technology,” said Shengelia.
“After graduation from the School of Technology the student will not be just a self-taught person like most IT specialists in the market, as they will have not only IT education, in addition they will be educated in law, media and business which is necessary to start work in concrete organizations,” declared Simongulashvili.
According to Simongulashvili, CST are holding negotiations on exchange programs with several American schools and universities, also the students will have the possibility to study at CU’s main partner, Georgia’s State University, USA.
“Now we are working on a contingent of lecturers; we have an agreement with highly qualified IT specialists, who are educated in business and IT abroad. Also one or two lecturers per semester will be invited from our partner universities,” declared Simongulashvili.
According to Shengelia, in every school of Caucasus University the cost of study per year comes to GEL 6,900.
