The average daily Russian casualties (killed and wounded) in Ukraine has fallen over the past two months from a conflict high of over 1262 per day in May to 1140 in July 2024, according to British Defence Intelligence.
Despite this reduction, the last three months have been the costliest for Russian forces since February 2022, according to Ukrainian General Staff reporting.
The reduction in daily average is likely indicative of Russian forces consolidating positions on the Kharkiv axis. Although this new approach has increased the pressure on the frontline, an effective Ukrainian defence and a lack of Russian training reduces Russia’s ability to exploit any tactical successes into wider operational gains.
Russia’s casualty rate will likely continue to average above 1,000 a day throughout August 2024 as Russia continues offensive operations on a wide front from Kharkiv in the north to Robotyne in the south of Ukraine.
In 2023, New York Times reported official data from the U.S. Government about Russia’s military casualties. “The officials said, are approaching 300,000. The number includes as many as 120,000 deaths and 170,000 to 180,000 injured troops. The Russian numbers dwarf the Ukrainian figures, which the officials put at close to 70,000 killed and 100,000 to 120,000 wounded”.
Between 462,000 and 728,000 Russian soldiers have been killed, injured, or captured in the invasion of Ukraine by mid-June, The Economist reported on July 5, citing leaked documents from the U.S. Defense Department. These numbers exceed the number of Russian troops who were preparing for the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
The Kremlin does not release official statistics on miliary casualties. The Kyiv Independent confirmed that Ukraine’s General Staff has reported that Russia has lost more than 540,000 troops in Ukraine since the beginning of the full-scale invasion — a number that includes killed and injured.
According to Ukkrainian Government, as of August 1, 2024, Russian tank losses in Ukraine reached 8,399 units, in addition to 16,203 lost armored personnel vehicles. Many of those were destroyed by Ukrainian defenders (and some even got stolen by Ukrainian farmers) and left on Ukrainian land as Russian troops were retreating from the Kyiv, Kharkiv, or Kherson regions, destined to be turned into scrap metal.
In more than 29 months of full-scale war, Ukrainian forces also managed to destroy 28 Russian warships and boats, including the infamous “Moskva”, the flagship of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, as well as one submarine.
What are the Russian aircraft losses in Ukraine?
363 Russian planes and 326 helicopters were shot down by August 2024. In addition, Russian combat losses include more than two thousand cruise missiles and more than 12,9 thousand UAVs.
According to President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy, as of May 2024, Russia uses more than 3,000 guided aerial bombs every month to shell Ukrainian cities.
France estimates that 150,000 Russian soldiers have been killed during Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine, Foreign Minister Stéphane Séjourné said in an interview.
The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) verified 10,582 deaths of civilians in Ukraine during the war as of February 2024.
