U.S. Retail sales (NAICS 44-45) increased 8.0% from $6,519.8 billion in 2021 to $7,041.0 billion in 2022, according to new estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2022 Annual Retail Trade Survey (ARTS).
Men’s Clothing Stores (NAICS 44811) had $10.8 billion in sales in 2022, up 27.9% from 2021. This was one of the largest year-to-year increases of any retail industry in 2022.
Motor Vehicle and Parts Dealers’ (NAICS 441) sales increased 2.9% from $1,478.4 billion in 2021 to $1,521.0 billion in 2022.
Grocery Store (NAICS 4451) sales increased 8.2% from $793.4 billion in 2021 to $858.3 billion in 2022.
Gasoline Station (NAICS 447) sales increased 28.5% from $572.7 billion in 2021 to $736.1 billion in 2022.
Electronic Shopping and Mail-Order Houses (NAICS 4541) sales increased 9.5% from $1,019.9 billion in 2021 to $1,117.0 billion in 2022.
The Census Bureau has been conducting the ARTS since 1952. This survey includes 16,500 employer businesses that sell directly to consumers classified in the retail trade sector in the 50 states and the District of Columbia. It does not include data for businesses in U.S. territories. Firms without paid employees (nonemployers) are included.
