Wizz Air Abu Dhabi, a joint venture between the Hungarian budget airline and Abu Dhabi state holding company ADQ, will begin operations on October 1, with six new routes including the west Georgia city of Kutaisi. “For the first time in the history of Kutaisi International Airport, it will be possible to get to the Middle East by regular direct flights“, reads a press release published by United Airports of Georgia.” Flights connecting Kutaisi to Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, will be carried out two times a week. Director of the United Airports of Georgia Tamar Archuadze said that adding the new route from Kutaisi airport proves that WizzAir has long-term plans on the Georgian market, as reported by local news platform Agenda.ge
Other routes from Abu Dhabi, besides Kutaisi, are Larnaca, Alexandria, Athens, Yerevan, and Odessa. Tickets are already on sale on the airline’s official website and mobile app.
Wizz Air serves many cities across Europe, as well as some destinations in North Africa and the Middle East. The airline was established in September 2003. The lead investor is Indigo Partners, an American private equity firm specialising in transportation investments. The first flight was made from Katowice International Airport on 19 May 2004. The airline’s CEO is József Váradi, former CEO of Malév Hungarian Airlines. The company is registered in Pest County (Hungary).
On May 1 Wizz Air has implemented additional preventive measures aiming to minimize the potential spread of coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19). It is now compulsory to wear face masks on board of aircraft for both passengers and crew. For flights over 4 hours it is recommended to bring more face masks. Other protective gear is recommended and appreciated. Also, the company hands out complimentary sanitizing wipes during boarding and also completely disinfects our aircraft daily. Please respect social distancing guidelines on and off our aircraft. Seat allocation will take this into consideration wherever possible.
Wizz Air strongly suggests you to always check the travel regulations on the official websites and with local Embassies before travelling. It may happen you will be not allowed to enter the country of destination (if not being a national/resident of the country of arrival) or quarantine might apply. Regulations are changing rapidly and vary per country, therefore always make sure you have the latest information to have a smooth journey. Please also pay close attention to related announcements at the airport and by our crew onboard, as different rules may be valid depending on local specifications.
Few months ago Wizz Air suspended all flights from the Kutaisi International Airport, in order to prevent the spread of the coronavirus in Georgia.
Georgian Foreign Minister Davit Zalkaliani said, that “the recent rumour saying that the Hungarian low-cost airline was planning to close its base at Kutaisi International Airport is nothing but the speculation, which has nothing to do with the real picture.” “Wizz Air expresses its readiness to carry out flights between Georgia and other countries as soon as regular commercial flights are resumed,” a Hungarian low-cost airline stated on July 1st, according to Georgian Public Broadcasting. As mentioned in the airline’s statement, “Wizz Air actively monitors the global and local epidemiological situation, considers the regulations of the Government of Georgia and continues to operate in the country.”
