The FINANCIAL — Lufthansa remains on the growth path. In the first nine months of the year, around 42.5 million passengers flew with Germany’s biggest airline. This is 5.6 per cent more than in the same period in the previous year.
Passenger numbers rose significantly in all traffic regions. According to Lufthansa, capacity utilisation in all regions also improved sharply. The seat load factor on Lufthansa flights was up accordingly by two percentage points to 77.4 per cent.
Lufthansa Cargo also improved its traffic performance in the nine-month term. With 1.3 million tonnes, the transported volume increased by 2.5 per cent. The cargo load factor climbed by 1.5 percentage points to 68.4 per cent.
In the course of this year, a total of 45.8 million passengers have flown with the airline companies in the Lufthansa Group. Of the total, 3.3 million since July were carried by SWISS. The Swiss carrier was fully integrated in the Lufthansa Group in the third quarter. Its passenger traffic figures since July are accordingly included in the Group results.
The financial figures of the Lufthansa Group for the first nine months of the year will be published on 25 October 2007, company said.
Lufthansa said it added three new routes: Orlando, Karachi, Lahore. With the introduction of the 2007/2008 winter timetable, the airline’s global route network will encompass 188 destinations in 79 countries. Three new routes are included: to Orlando, Karachi and Lahore. In order to
maintain as stable a schedule as possible throughout the year, many of the new services
that were added this summer will continue to operate in the forthcoming winter season.
The new winter timetable is valid from Sunday 28 October 2007 to 29 March 2008.
“The offered seating capacity across Lufthansa’s entire network will increase by 5.7 per
cent compared with last year”, company reported. “Available capacity will be increased by 4.0 per cent on European routes and by 6.5 per cent on international routes.
"We are enlarging our longhaul route network, with the focus on America and Asia," said Karl Ulrich Garnadt, member of the Board of Lufthansa Passenger Airlines. "In Europe, we are further expanding our route network to Eastern Europe and simultaneously raising frequencies on several routes to business destinations," he added.
The winter timetable includes a total of 13,272 scheduled flights, which represents an increase of 2.9 per cent on the previous year (winter 2006/2007: 12,908 flights). From 28 October, Lufthansa will operate 12,208 flights per week on domestic German and European routes and 1,064 long-haul flights to 42 countries in three continents.
