The FINANCIAL — The Khashuri bypass road – a section of the Zemo Osiauri-Chumateleti Project has opened on 22 August, 2020 by Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia and Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure Maia Tskitishvili. The project was implemented with the financial support of the European Investment Bank with the financial warrant of the European Union (133 million GEL) and the World Bank (50 million GEL). The road will reduce traffic jams in Khashuri and transit traffic will pass through a completely new road. The Khashuri Bypass Road will reduce travel time by 40-50 percent.
The new Khashuri bypass road not only will significantly relieve the city of Khashuri from traffic jams, but Transit traffic will be fully directed on the new road generating time savings and lower vehicle operating cost for road users, as well as ensuring higher road safety for Khashuri residents and road users.
“The most important thing is that this 13-kilometer section, 11 kilometers of which is a full, 4-lane road, with 2 kilometers temporarily consisting of two lanes until the end of October, is of the greatest importance. Khashuri Bypass Road will primarily benefit the residents of Khashuri as well as, of course, all of Georgia. This is the holiday season and during our travels, we can all see the scale of the works being carried out on the East-West Highway.” – Giorgi Gakharia stated.
Deputy Head of the mission of EU Representation to Georgia Asuncion Sanchez Ruiz tweeted:
”Here another example of what the EU does In Georgia. Khashuri bypass inaugurated today! Facilitates transport links for business, improves safety and reduces transport time for citizens and tourists. Western Georgia now closer to Tbilisi!”
The Khashuri bypass road is part of Zemo Osiauri-Chumateleti road and after the completion of both sections, the road will reach Rikoti pass tunnel. On this section, the road will bypass Khashuri, Surami and Chumateleti. Under the project, a total of 4-lane cement-concrete road, 21 bridges, 5 tunnels, reinforced concrete underpasses, water pipes and drainage systems will be constructed.
