The FINANCIAL — The EU-funded Clima East project has issued a series of recommendations on improving sustainability in Ukrainian forests, following an evaluation of Ukraine’s susceptibility to climate change.
Recommendations include the development of forestry measures under the national climate change strategy, and the development of policies aimed at sustainable forest management, according to EU Neighbourhood Info.
The study gives a scientific basis for the development of credible climate change adaptation policies and response measures in the forestry sector, drawing attention to current and projected climate change impacts on forests, and enabling informed decision-making.
The case study was conducted by a group of national and international experts and leading scientists in climatology and forestry and highlights EU experience, knowledge and advanced scientific research on climate change impact.
Flatland forests make up approximately 80% of forested lands in Ukraine, which are already being affected by climate change. The significance of these impacts is likely to increase.
The Clima East project supports climate change mitigation and adaptation in the Eastern Partnership countries and Russia. More specifically, it aims to foster improved climate change policies, strategies and market mechanisms more in line with the EU acquis in the partner countries, by supporting regional cooperation and improving access to information regarding EU climate change policies and acquis. The Clima East Expert Facility provides specific and dedicated short term expert support to organisations in the Clima East Partner countries to assist in defined tasks on the ground in climate change policy and action.
