The FINANCIAL — As part of his official visit to Baku, Georgian Foreign Minister Mikheil Janelidze met his Azerbaijani counterpart, foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov.
The two ministers spoke about the traditionally successful co-operation between Georgia and Azerbaijan based on centuries-long friendship and good-neighbourly relations, according to MFA of Georgia.
The sides also discussed important issues of co-operation reaffirming their readiness to fully use trade-economic potential between the two countries, including in such areas as transport, energy, tourism, culture, people-to-people contacts.
Special note was taken of the role of Georgia and Azerbaijan in implementing the global transport and energy projects. The sides paid special attention to the importance of fully using the transport potential in the south-west direction and of developing transit possibilities of the Europe-Asia transport corridor.
Discussions focused on the current status of the ongoing projects, including the historical Red Bridge restoration process.
The sides noted with satisfaction the co-operation in the area of culture and the joint action plan for 2017 envisaging concrete measures in various areas.
The sides spoke about the co-operation within the EU’s Eastern Partnership Initiative. Elmar Mammadyarov congratulated Mikheil Janelidze on the European Parliament’s decision to grant Georgia visa-free travel with Europe. Talking points also included co-operation within the framework of international organizations, including GUAM, which will be chaired by Georgia in 2017. Special attention was paid to the security situation and the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the region.
Within the framework of the visit, the Georgian Foreign Minister also held meetings with President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, Prime Minister Artur Rasizade and Speaker of the Milli Mejlis Oktay Asadov. At the meeting with the Prime Minister, special attention was paid to the development of trade-economic relations between the countries. During his discussions with the Speaker of the Milli Mejlis, Mikheil Janelidze spoke about the role of parliamentary relations in the development of economic and trade co-operation between the countries. According to Mikheil Janelidze, there are plans to set up a parliamentary group of friendship with Azerbaijan. The Georgian Foreign Minister invited Oktay Asadov to Georgia.
Within the framework of the visit, Mikheil Janelidze paid tribute to the memory of national leader of Azerbaijan – Heidar Aliev and laid a wreath at the “Eternal Flame” memorial.
